Florida Python Challenge Removes Nearly 200 Invasive Snakes

Florida's Battle Against Invasive Pythons

The 2024 Florida Python Challenge has successfully removed 195 Burmese pythons from the Everglades ecosystem. This annual event, aimed at controlling the invasive species population, attracted 857 participants from across North America.

This collective effort continues to have a direct positive impact on the Everglades and our native wildlife through removal and awareness.

  • Ronald Kiger won the $10,000 grand prize for removing 20 pythons.
  • Additional prizes were awarded in novice, professional, and military categories.
  • The longest python caught measured 9 feet, 11 inches.
  • Burmese pythons can lay 50 to 100 eggs at a time, posing a significant threat.
  • Residents can report non-native species through the FWC's Invasive Species Hotline.

The challenge not only incentivizes python removal but also raises awareness about the ecological impact of these invasive snakes. Since 2017, over 14,000 pythons have been removed from the Everglades, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to preserving Florida's native ecosystem.
